Each month the people of Grace choose an organization, individual or family – members or not – who needs help and encouragement. This mission for the month will receive the free will offering from our after-church coffee fellowship collected during that month.

Our January Mission is the THE PELICAN RAPIDS FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES who are raising funds to help defray costs for a Jason Grey concert.

Our February Mission is the PELICAN RAPIDS FOOD SHELF.

We help support DEEPER STILL MINISTRIES based in Chiang Rai, Thailand

Julie Olsen Smude

Missionary and Pastor Julie Olson Smude works to bring Christianity to the Chiang Rai, Thailand area where she lives. Julie is a founder of the non-profit organization Deeper Still Ministries.

Julie worked to plant a Christian church about nine years ago and was the pastor of  Chiang Rai City Church until a native Thai minister was installed.  The church began with 6 or 7 people and has grown to the present 150 members. Julie is a friend and mentor to the current Thai pastor of this church. Deeper Still Ministries and the Chiang Rai City Church partner together for medical outreach and Christmas outreach to the hill tribes of northern Thailand and some areas in Myanmar (Burma).

Deeper Still Ministries works with and mentors local Thai college students who have become Christians. The hope is that these individuals will take their training and faith into the mission fields of their jobs, homes and villages in Northern Thailand to spread the message of Jesus Christ.

Julie and other Deeper Still Ministry staff also work with organizations and groups whose goal is to help young girls and boys who would otherwise be in the streets of Thailand or caught in human trafficking.

Julie established  a ministry center and residence to teach English and other skills in a Christian setting. She was a qualified TESOL/TESL instructor for the Chiang Rai SEA English Academy which is a branch of the international SEA English Academy. This center also provided respite care for missionaries returning from the mission fields and it hosted small Christian mission groups from overseas who were working in the area.

This year Deeper Still has undergone some major changes. The ministry center was turned over to another Christian mission organization funded by a California church and some of Deeper Still’s staff members are helping out during the transition. Julie has moved from a group living situation at the center to a private home where she has her office. She has been working with Thai government agencies and staff to set up criteria and guidelines for teaching English and Thai languages. This will be valuable for missionaries coming into the country who want to learn how to teach English and who also need to learn the Thai language.

Julie has recently established Deeper Still Ministries as a Thai non-profit organization and is working on having it entirely run by native Thai staff. A woman named Noina, whom Julie has mentored over the years and who has worked for Deeper Still in the past, is training to take over the leadership of Deeper Still Ministries.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’     Matthew 25:35-40

Julie Olson Smude visited us on October 14, 2012 and presented Grace Lutheran Church with a beautiful watercolor painting of our church building located in a Thailand landscape setting. This painting was done by Thai artist Paradorn Wora-apinyaporn.
